What caused the Catastrophic Decline of Exports from BiH in January?

In January 2024, exports from Bosnia and Herzegovina amounted to one billion and 170 million BAM, which is 16.6 percent less than in the same month last year.

In January of last year, exports were 1.4 billion, which means that we are talking about a drop of as much as 230 million BAM.

Exports to CEFTA countries in January this year amounted to 176 million BAM, which is 37.3 percent less than in January 2023. Exports to Serbia are lower by an incredible 47.2 percent compared to January last year, and to Croatia by 17.8 percent. Exports to Montenegro decreased by 8.5 percent. Exports to EU countries amounted to 897 million BAM, which is 12 percent less than in January 2023.

Where is the cause of the fall?

According to BiznisInfo.ba’s analysis, there are two key causes of the decline, namely the decline in the export of electrical energy and ores, i.e. mineral fuels.

The export of electricity in January was 74.2 million BAM, which is 52.5 percent less than in January last year, when it amounted to 158.6 million BAM. So, on this item alone, the loss is 84.4 million BAM.

The second item on which there was a big drop was mineral fuels and lubricants (natural gas, oil and coal), which we exported for 108.2 million BAM, which is a drop of 46.8 percent compared to 203.5 million in January. 2023. It is, therefore, about a reduction of over 95 million marks.

By the way, the decrease affected both entities, but somewhat more the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

For January 2024, the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina achieved exports in the total value of 799 million BAM, which is 17.3 percent less compared to January of the previous year, when exports amounted to 966 million BAM. It is, therefore, about a decrease of 167 million.

In January, the Federation exported electricity for 31.1 million BAM, which is only 34.2 percent of the export from January 2023, which was 91 million BAM.

Republika Srpska had exports in January 2024 of about 350 million marks, which is a decrease of 14.8 percent on an annual basis. In January 2023, exports were around 410 million. It is, therefore, about a reduction of about 60 million BAM.
