-UP: Krsko, 05.04.2003., Nuklearna elektrana Krsko, foto Darko JELINEKThe issue of the construction of nuclear waste disposal site in Croatia is one of the most important topics in relations between B&H and our western neighbors for several months.

To recall, Croatia is planning to construct a disposal site for nuclear waste in the Municipality Dvor, on the locality of Trgovska Gora. In the beginning, it was supposed to be only waste generated from medical analysis, but in the perspective, waste from a nuclear power plant Krsko should be disposed on this site as well.

The problem is that the mentioned site is located just three kilometers from the border between B&H and Croatia. Moreover, there is a danger that in case of an eventual leakage of nuclear waste from the disposal site could contaminate groundwater from which are formed tributary of the Una River, so it could affect not only the economic potential of this part of B&H, but also human lives.

State Office for Nuclear Safety of Croatia informed the relevant B&H institutions that they will be invited when debate on the strategy of the environmental impact starts.

“So far we have asked this question during the bilateral meetings with representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Croatia. Again, we will “put it on the table” when the new Croatian government is formed. Moreover, I spoke about the issue and expressed protest of B&H on these problems at a conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency, which was held in Vienna,” said Minister of Foreign Affairs of B&H Igor Crnadak.
