pavlovicSlobodan Mike Pavlovic, who founded the largest private university in B&H until now close to his home village of Popovi on the border with Serbia, is not a professor or academic worker.
This bombastic and controversial businessman whose role model is director of Microsoft, Bill Gates, planned the construction of an entire city.
He decided to engage in education, because Slobomir University has a significant place in the grand idea to turn the wasteland near Popovi in the city of peace – Slobomir. Name of the place, which should be strengthen ties between B&H and Serbia even more, comes from connecting names of the couple Pavlovic – Slobodan and Miroslava.
By emigrating to Chicago, Pavlovic found a way to get rich at the North American insufficiently regulated market of real estate. This tycoon, who made his fortune by trading real estates, found himself in the court archives mentioned as a member of a group of five people from Chicago that were accused of attempted setting fire in the winter of 1981. It was a ruinous building that was previously insured to a large amount.
After he returned from federal prison from US, he started investing in RS. One of Pavlovic’s first business ventures in the RS was to build a bridge over the Drina River as he dreamed as a boy.
In cooperation with his partners, including Saul Azar, his partner in business with real estate in Chicago, Pavlovic bought Semberska Bank in Bijeljina for 1.5 million BAM in 2001. Year after, he bought Privredna Bank Doboj and Privredna Bank from Brcko for 1.2 million BAM.
Pavlovic also bought a stake in two food companies in 2004, Zitopromet, grain processors from Bijeljina and Romania Sprint. Documents show that he paid 1.6 million BAM for Zitopromet, and the rest in the vouchers. Moreover, Pavlovic is co-owner of a printing press in Brcko, which recently won the tender for the printing of the annual report of the Central Bank, says Slobodan Krstic, Director of MOSST Print Company from Popovi.
But banking, food industry and printing are small challenges compared to his dream project – to own a city by the river.
Pavlovic had difficulty in finding a long-term international partner for Slobomir University.
Representatives of Slobomir University has on their website a document for which they claim that is the agreement that was signed with the University of Washington in September last year.
But US academics state that the deal was never finalized and that they have retreated from it.
