Without Agreement on the Election Law in BiH

Following a new round of talks at the European Union Delegation in Sarajevo, leaders discussing electoral models and substantial changes to Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Election Law declined to make statements to the media or reveal details of the meeting.

This meeting on key reforms of the BiH Election Law, at which the parties are to agree on the election of members of the House of Peoples of the BiH Parliament and FBiH, was attended by “Neum negotiators” and EU official Angelina Eichhorst and new US Ambassador to BiH Michael Murphy.

Among the political leaders at the meeting in the Great Hall were representatives of HDZ and SDA Dragan Covic and Bakir Izetbegovic, then leaders of NiP, SBB, NES and HDZ 1990 Elmedin Konakovic, Fahrudin Radoncic, Nermin Ogresevic and Ilija Cvitanovic. All of them tried to find a solution at the last negotiations in Neum, but today, for the first time, they sat down with the new American ambassador.

After the talks ended, one part of the negotiators left the building and said that the agreement from the meeting was such that no one would give statements after today’s talks, while the other part of the politicians went through the garage avoiding the media.

The leader of the People and Justice party, Elmedin Konakovic, was the only one to address the public from this meeting, but he did not go into the details of the proposed electoral model. Allegedly, HDZ insisted on being elected to the Presidency of BiH, so that their candidate will definitely be a Croatian member.

“It seems to me that we all have the same views on the abolition of the famous ultimate ethnic prefix, but in the end we must sit down with the representatives from RS., “Konakovic said.

He also commented on the topic from the special meeting held in the hall next to it, at which the People and Justice did not have a representative, and it is about the part of electoral reforms concerning the protection of the integrity of the process and prevention of abuses.

“Thanks to the SDA, HDZ and SNSD have full power to control the process when it comes to integrity. This is not something that is very important to Izetbegović and they will not move a millimeter unless it is part of a complete solution,” Konakovic concluded.

Talks in the EU Delegation will continue tomorrow morning.
