unaWorld Water Day is celebrated on 22 March, and this year under the slogan “Water and energy” which aims to draw attention on interconnectedness and interdependence of water and energy, highlighting essential use of water for production of energy and the use of energy for extraction, purification and bringing the water to the consumer.

A series of activities are organizing this year in B&H to draw attention on the importance of water and its connection with the energy production.

Marking the World Water Day under this year’s motto has a greater relevance considering that some of the data relating to energy or water use for energy purposes in B&H show that B&H has significant primary energy resources.

The estimated hydro-power potential is about 6.800 MW, of which about 35 % in terms of capacity are utilized or about 38 % compared to the maximum possible production of electricity from these sources, which is the lowest utilization of hydro-power potentials in Europe.

Marking this date in B&H started in March 1995, when the gathering of water management experts was held in Konjic on the topic of post-war reconstruction and rehabilitation of water management systems, which continues until today. Thus, this is the 20th World Water Day that is celebrated in B&H.
