During its presidency of the United Nations (UN) Security Council, Russia will lead discussions on the situation in the Middle East, the Balkans, and numerous other topics, stated the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova.

Zakharova emphasized that Moscow will promote a constructive and unifying agenda even in the current challenging circumstances.

“Russia, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council and a responsible participant in the international community, will traditionally make maximum efforts to ensure the smooth and efficient functioning of the Council,” said Zakharova.

She reminded that Russia took over the presidency of the UN Security Council on October 1st for one month, which carries the primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security.

According to her, during October, two central events will be held – a debate on the situation in the Middle East on October 23rd and UN Day on October 24th, when a debate “Looking to the future” is expected.

Among other planned events, Zakharova listed sessions on Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), Haiti, Yemen, Colombia, Lebanon, Libya, the Great Lakes region, Syria, Somalia, the Central African Republic, as well as on resolving issues of Western Sahara and the self-proclaimed Kosovo, and on cooperation between the UN and the African Union.
