Thousands of traditional Bosnian coffee cups were placed on the square in Chicago on July 11th to commemorate the victims of genocide in Srebrenica. This form of exhibition is the work of an artist, a Bosnian, Aida Sehovic and her team of volunteers.

In the last 12 years, the exhibitions, which represents coffee that will never be drunk, was installed in New York, Geneva, Toronto, Istanbul, Stockholm and The Hague.

An installation called “Why you are not here?” encourages people to remember genocide in which more than 8,000 people have been brutally killed because of their name and faith. Coffee is served to them, those who will never drink it again.

The aim of the exhibition is to raise awareness of Srebrenica, accepting the fact that this has happened and finding the way of coexistence.

“We do not have any flags or banners, and that is why people are questioning what the exhibition is about and they are approaching and questioning,” said Sehovic, who told the tragic story of Srebrenica in a language understood by everyone.
