The Greek island of Santorini in the southern Aegean Sea has recorded around 1,440 earthquakes since February 1, according to the Geodynamic Institute of Greece.
Around 440 of the quakes were above magnitude three, and 73 above magnitude four.
The island recorded 45 earthquakes on Wednesday, including two measuring four on the Richter scale and ten measuring three.
Meanwhile, an emergency meeting was held in Athens, chaired by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and attended by Civil Protection Minister Vasilis Kikilias and experts.
Speaking at the meeting, Efthimios Lekas, a leading geologist and head of the state-run Earthquake Planning and Protection Agency (OSAP), warned of a high risk of landslides on Santorini due to the earthquake.
Also, Kostas Papazakos, a prominent expert in geophysics and seismology, said:
“The situation seems to be improving in terms of seismic activity.”
He appealed to the islanders to remain calm.
After the experts’ presentations, Mitsotakis said that they were a little more optimistic today than yesterday, AA writes.
