Of the total number of illiterate people, 0.8 % are men and 4.8 % are women, according to the Agency for Statistics of BiH.

This agency presented official statistics from the census of population and households in BiH that was conducted in 2013 on the number of illiterate citizens and data on the informatic illiteracy of the population in BiH on the occasion of the International Literacy Day.

By the definition of literacy that was used in the census of population, households, and apartments in BiH in 2013, a literate person is the one that can understand and write a short, simple statement about its daily life, otherwise, the person is considered as illiterate.

According to recent censuses, the number of illiterate people in Serbia is 1.96 %, 0.8 % in Croatia and 1.5 % in Montenegro.

For the first time, data on computer literacy were collected in BiH. Out of a total of 3.180.115 persons that are over ten, there were 1.229.972 or 38.7 % informatically illiterate people.

Informatics literacy is defined as the ability of a person to process texts, to create tables, use e-mail and the Internet, while a person that is unable to perform any of the mentioned activities is considered as informatically illiterate.

The International Literacy Day is celebrated on September 8, every year. It was founded by UNESCO in the year of 1967 with the aim to promote the significance of learning and literacy.
