28 Families Returned Home

aziracThe initial objective of the EU Floods Recovery Programme was to rehabilitate 600 priority housing units in the flooded areas across BiH by the end of 2014, focusing on assisting the most vulnerable persons to return to their homes before the winter.

Thanks to the accelerated pace of rehabilitation works, this number has increased and so far a total of 1,108 housing units have been rehabilitated through the EU Floods Recovery Programme. This marks the completion of the first phase of the Programme’s housing recovery component which started in mid-September 2014.

The Alzirac Settlement in the Samac Municipality was almost completely destroyed in the catastrophic floods in May 2014. Most of the houses in this settlement were built in 1961 as prefabricated barracks with frail structures, due to which the extent of flood damage was extensive. The floods caused additional hardship for the families living in this settlement, who were already amongst the most vulnerable people in the area.

Thanks to the EU Floods Recovery Programme, 28 housing units in the settlement have now been rehabilitated, enabling the families to return home. The EU’s support has assisted the families in normalising their living conditions, as provisionally the families were scattered around the Šamac region, living with relatives, friends or in various alternative accommodation facilities set up by the municipal authorities.
