Tunnel Karaula, near Kladanj, was officially put into operation yesterday. The tunnel will facilitate and shorten the time of travel between Sarajevo and Tuzla.
Tunnel Karaula is located on the road M18, section Kladanj – Podpaklenik over the pass Karaula, in the length of 902 meters. The project cost 31 million BAM. It is expected that it will speed up the road communication between Sarajevo and Tuzla, especially during the winter times.
The total length of newly built road is 4,246 meters, and it consists of four bridges with a total length of 675 meters, the tunnel Karaula in the length of 902 meters and 2,669 meters of route. The section is designed for driving with an average speed of 80 km/h, the width of the road is 2 x 3.25 meters, while the width of slow lane is three meters.
Muhamed Catic, project manager of Strabag, said that Karaula is the most modern tunnel on the main roads of BiH, which is fully equipped with video surveillance, changing signalization, ventilation of tunnel and 460 meters long evacuation tube.
“The greatest significance of the project is that the route was angled down to 100 meters in the winter as well, the entire saddle Karaula is avoided in this way, and therefore it will be much easier to maintain the road in the winter,” said Catic, adding that this was a demanding and complicated project.
The tunnel is connected with the main road M18 with temporary connections. They will be removed after real connections are made.
