un-councilOn the 1st of January 2010, BiH was admitted as impermanent member in the UN Security Council.

With the new year of 2010, five countries have become new impermanent members of the Security Council of the UN. These countries were BiH, Brazil, Lebanon, Gabon and Nigeria.

Five new Member States that signed a two-year term replaced states of their geographical group in the UN system. Croatia was replaced from Eastern European group, Costa Rica from the Group of Latin America, the Caribbean and Vietnam from Asian group, and Libya and Burkina Faso from the African group.

The Security Council is the most important body of the United Nations, whose member countries entrust the task of preserving international peace and security. The Council consists of 15 member countries of the UN; five of which are permanent (United States, China, France, Great Britain and Russia) and ten impermanent members that are elected for two years.

BiH has never been a member of the Security Council before. From the former Yugoslav republics the members of the Security Council were only Slovenia and Croatia until then. Yugoslavia, for example, had this mandate four times and the last time period in 1988 and 1989.
