A human case of the plague has been reported in the US state of Colorado, and health authorities warn that it is a potentially deadly disease transmitted by rodents and fleas.
American health authorities have not announced the patient’s condition or how he got infected, but they remind that the plague killed millions of people in the Middle Ages.
A human case of plague was reported in Pueblo County, 118 miles south of Denver.
“We advise citizens to protect themselves and their pets from the plague,” said Pueblo Health Department official Alicia Solis.
According to epidemiological services, 16 people have died from the plague in the United States over the past 20 years, and the last victim was recorded last year in southwestern Colorado.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention says that it is very rare in humans and that they record an average of seven cases of infection per year.
“The disease can affect people of all ages, but half of the cases involve patients aged 12 to 45,” the Center states.
