A homeless man who won 37,000 euros in the lottery last month but could not get the money because his documents were out of date was now able to cash his ticket after red tape was cut especially for him, Italian media reported over the weekend, Ansa agency reported.

The man, Gianluigi, was initially prevented from receiving the award because he did not have a health card and his tax number had expired. But after a month of bureaucratic fiddling, officials said last Friday he could get the money.

Gianluigi is originally from Puglia, so people who know him in his adopted home of Senigallia, a Marche resort, renamed him ‘Cassano’ after the former Roma and Italy striker Antonio Cassano, who is from the old town of Bari.

This story of happiness made headlines in Italy.
