The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, sent a letter to the Director of the Srebrenica Memorial Center, Emir Suljagić, after he visited Srebrenica.
In a letter, Khan thanked Suljagić and the team at the Center for welcoming him during his visit to Potočari in early July.
“I am writing to express my sincere gratitude to you and your team at the Srebrenica Memorial Center for a visit that has left a deep impression on me.”
It was his first visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also the first visit of a Mayor of London to the Srebrenica Memorial Center.
“Like many British people, I have spent a large part of my adult life following the news. I still remember the faces of desperate people fleeing for their lives, and years later, hundreds of green coffins waiting for burial. Being there was a deeply moving experience I will carry with me for the rest of my life,” Khan wrote.
He especially singled out the work of the Memorial Center, Mothers of Srebrenica, and all those who have been insisting on truth, remembrance, and justice for years.
“The work that you, the Mothers of Srebrenica, and many others, have done in the fight for remembrance, at the very site in Srebrenica, is a testament to the power of truth in this fight for justice,” Mayor of London said.
Sadiq Khan’s visit is part of a wider cooperation between the Memorial Center and institutions of the United Kingdom. The government of the United Kingdom supports the development program of the Memorial Center, including strengthening its educational, research, and institutional capacities.
