Destroyed tank. High school students in Sarajevo could soon see this every day next to the school building.
The city authorities plan to build a memorial fifty meters from the Second Gymnasium, in honor of the members of the special police who died in the war.
The monument will be located in the park named after the Bosnian sevdalinka legend Safet Isovic. In the same park, there is also a memorial plaque to the fallen underage fighters of the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina (RBiH) and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Municipality of Centar Sarajevo. Across the street there is a private elementary school.
The idea of placing a tank in the park has existed for several years, and it was brought up to date again by the mayor of Sarajevo, Benjamina Karic, a member of the Social Democratic Party of BiH.
“The monument, in addition to the culture of memory, also has an educational character so that future generations of Bosnians and Herzegovina can be reminded of the glorious days of the fight for their homeland,” Karic said, among other things, on December 7th, reviving an idea that is almost a decade old.
Until now, no one has asked the parents, teachers, and childrenfor opinion
Almost 30 years since the end of the war in BiH, primary and secondary school students participate in the commemoration of the anniversaries of the war brigades of the RBiH Army, the Croatian Defense Council (HVO) or the Army of the Republika Srpska (RS).
In the Second Gymnasium, on the other hand, they say that no one asked them for their opinion about the tank in the park next to the school.
Does a monument belong next to an educational institution?
“A monument, which has an extremely militant appearance, has no place next to any educational institution in BiH. We are not against building a monument. On the contrary, we believe that the people who are responsible for the defense of Sarajevo should have a monument and that we should be aware of their role,” stated Maida Zagorac, coordinator of the Peace Building Network, Slobodna Evropa writes.
