Researchers from the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences have discovered a previously unknown tomb more than 4,000 years old near the famous pyramids in Egypt.

“A Russian expedition from the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, led by Doctor of Philosophy in History Eleonora Karmyshnyeva, has found a unique, previously unknown stone tomb and has begun exploring it. The discovered tomb is located in the eastern sector of the Giza pyramid complex, 300 meters from the Great Pyramid of Giza,” the institute said in a statement, TASS reported.

The statement noted that so far a small hole has been cleared, through which the remains of a wooden, painted sarcophagus can be seen, intact ceramic vessels, which were usually used to store food needed by the deceased in the afterlife, as well as other objects.

Archaeologists are now preparing to open the tomb.

“The tomb dates back to the Old Kingdom, when the Fifth Dynasty of ancient Egyptian pharaohs ruled. On the walls are drawings and reliefs depicting the tomb owner sitting with his wife in front of a sacrificial table, and their statuses are also carved into the stone,” said Kormiševa.
