About 42,000 people entered Syria to escape the Israeli offensive in Lebanon between Tuesday and Thursday, according to a Syrian official.

Among those who came through the Jdeidat Yabous border crossing are 31,000 Syrians and 11,000 Lebanese citizens.

Jassem Al-Mahmoud, the local deputy governor, said those who came from Lebanon were accommodated in shelters prepared by local authorities, including three hotels in southern Damascus and centers in rural Damascus.

Shelters have been erected throughout the province, and those staying in the centers are being provided with all the necessary services, as the authorities work to manage the increasing number of arrivals, the deputy governor added.

The surge in crossings followed days of Israeli airstrikes on Hezbollah positions in Lebanon, sparking a mass exodus of families seeking refuge in Syria.

Syria and Lebanon share about 375 kilometers of border, and the Jdeidat Yabous crossing, also known as the Masnaa crossing in Lebanon, is one of the five main routes between the two countries.
