Increased seismic activity on Santorini in recent weeks has caused panic among residents and tourists on the island.
While more than 11,000 people have fled the island due to the successive earthquakes, authorities have begun taking additional safety measures against a possible larger earthquake.
A large number of earthquakes measuring 3.5 to 5.2 on the Richter scale have been recorded in the past two weeks.
The situation has caused panic among residents of Santorini and tourists.
Especially those living in coastal areas have decided to abandon their homes and go inland or leave Santorini altogether.
This situation has negatively affected the tourist spots on the island.
Search and rescue dogs and rescue teams accompanied by drones have been sent to Santorini in case of a possible emergency scenario.
The teams have set up tents on a basketball court next to a hospital on the Greek island and have set up a logistics center.
“We have raised our precautions to the highest level. We are taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety of our people, the authorities are monitoring the situation daily,” said Santorini Mayor Nikos Zorzos.
Additional seismographs have been installed in various locations on Santorini to better monitor earthquake activity and detect risks in advance. Experts are trying to understand whether this is a sign of a possible larger earthquake by analyzing the source of the earthquake in detail.
People living in coastal areas are taking precautions to minimize the possible consequences of the waves by placing sandbags in front of some houses and churches.
Authorities have warned citizens to follow official statements without panic and not to believe unofficial information, AA writes.
