Member of the Bundestag from Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH),Adis Ahmetovic stated that the electoral reform must be carried out in the direction of implementing all judgments in the new law in order to overcome ethnic divisions in BiH.
Strengthen the election process
”Comprehensive reform of the electoral law represents a significant step forward towards political stabilization and strengthening of the pluralistic democratic society of BiH. Continued negotiations on the election law must include the necessary reform processes in order to strengthen the election process and eliminate existing discrimination.
Substantial implementation of the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights, such as the 2009 Sejdic-Finci judgment, is absolutely essential for the reform of the election law. The political goal must be to overcome ethnic divisions in the country. The debate on the principle of legitimate political representatives, on the other hand, will lead to deeper divisions and make the implementation of decisions more difficult, ” said Ahmetovic.
Negotiations must not delay the elections
He stressed that the ongoing negotiations on comprehensive electoral reform must not lead to the postponement of the elections in October 2022.
”Holding these elections must be a primary priority. They must be honest, transparent, and without manipulation. If the negotiations on the electoral reform do not yield results until the elections, which are in line with the judgments of the European Court of Human Rights, among others, they should be carried out soon after the elections, ” told Ahmetovic.
