In the early 90’s, Admir Masic as well as many others from this region, was forced to leave his home town and seek happiness somewhere else in the world. His story can serve as evidence and inspiration that with hard work and faith in yourself, you can achieve a lot.

“I’m a juncture of many nationalities. I was born in the former Yugoslavia, spent my childhood in B&H, and then spent a lot of time in Croatia, Italy and Germany,” explained Masic.

This “man of many countries” spent his early teenage years in a refugee camp in Croatia. At the age of 16, he was separated from his family, because he had to finish school in Croatia, while his parents and sister had to move to Germany, where his father found a job.

Due to his status of refugee, he could not formally attend school but teachers of the Technical School in Rijeka gave him private lessons, because they liked his desire and ambition to learn. One local family took him into their home so he did not live in a refugee camp anymore.

After that, he received a scholarship from an Italian non-governmental organization (NGO). Meanwhile, Croatian legislation changed so his high school diploma was recognized.

He continued his studies in Italy, and finished his doctor’s degree in the field of physical chemistry at the University of Turin. He is currently working in the fields of biology, chemistry and materials science.

Professor Admir Masic is a living example of how everyone can achieve great things when given the opportunity. His positive energy and enthusiasm have already contributed to some positive changes among students of MIT.

Although he is employed at the university from the 1st of September, the dean of the institution already entrusted him one of the most important projects in the field of material resistance research.
