Croatian customs officers seized 13,910,000 cigarettes in boxes that were not marked with tobacco stamps at the Bregana border crossing with Slovenia, which is one of the largest seizures of smuggled cigarettes.
Last night, after the toll booths, customs officers stopped a Croatian-registered truck carrying a shipping container, and a specially trained dog discovered the smuggling of cigarettes, Croatian media reported.
The surveillance determined that a total of 69,550 boxes, or 13,910,000 cigarettes in unmarked boxes, were located in the shipping container.
An investigation into the origin and destination of the goods is ongoing.
The driver tried to cross to the Slovenian side, but was prevented from doing so and handed over to the detention supervisor.
