A snowstorm in Istanbul caused the suspension of flights from this city, but also worsened the health of the passengers on the plane, as a result of which the doctor Amar Residovic from Sarajevo had two interventions while he was detained in the plane for hours.
On his way back from Dubai, where he was on holiday, Residovic was in Istanbul, and due to a snowstorm and the inability to take off for Sarajevo, he was detained for seven hours. After boarding the plane the snow started to fall and the runway was very quickly covered with snow.
In an interview, Residovic began his experience with the plane by saying that the plane was taxiing on the runway until it stopped between two planes and did not move anymore.
“We waited for the weather to stabilize for 20 minutes, then two hours, but every two hours later the captain would call with new information. I spent seven hours on a plane that was shut down, without electricity and without oxygen,” Residovic told.
He emphasized that people panicked considering that the plane was full and that many did not sleep for several hours due to the connection of flights. At around 5 p.m., the flight attendant asked on the loudspeaker if there was a doctor on the plane.
Out of 200 passengers, Residovic was the only doctor and he responded to the call of a flight attendant to help an olderTurkish citizen.
“As the plane was shut down and swayed by the wind, people began to lose consciousness. The elderly man from Turkey had difficulty breathing, a rapid pulse, high blood pressure, was dehydrated and covered in a cold sweat. I asked the man to be fitted with an oxygen mask while waiting for the captain’s approval. Everyone watched in panic. Since he was dehydrated, I gave him fluids and asked the flight crew to open the door. One froze so they managed to open another one in order to stabilize the patient, “ noted Residovic.
He added that during the first intervention, he received a call for a second intervention on the other side of the plane, where the younger girl lost consciousness. Also, she was anxious because she had coronavirus about ten days ago, and after calming down and being examined, he noticed that her pulse was rapid and started a ‘valsalva maneuver’, which encouraged the return of blood from the periphery to the center.
“Soon she also became stable. I filled out a report for both patients, and everyone was grateful for the interventions. After that, we sat on the plane for another two hours, where I went from one patient to another and monitored their condition. The bus came near the plane and transferred us to the airport, where we have been closed for three days and are waiting for flights,”said our interlocutor.
Flights that were planned for 12 p.m. have been canceled againso passengers and Residovic were waiting for a flight at 8 p.m.to return to Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH).
After graduating from Sarajevo School of Science and Technology (SSST), Residovic went to Istanbul and then to Dubai, where he continued his education.
