Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) Ambassador to the United Nations (UN) Sven Alkalaj is satisfied with the fact that the High Representative for BiH Christian Schmidt and the Chairman of the Presidency of BiH Sefik Dzaferovic will speak about the situation in BiH at the UN Security Council meeting. He says that, when it comes to BiH, things are going in the right direction.

”I expect the Security Council to receive up-to-date and accurate information on the situation in BiH and the things that should be done in the coming period. It is certain that BiH needs support to overcome ethnic divisions, move towards a modern European state that should soon receive candidate status, but also to create such a climate that BiH is a democratic society in which human rights will be respected, and all the values that the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights stands for. It is also one of the elements for peace and security in the region,” said Alkalaj.
It should be reminded that the content of the High Representative’s report, which will directly name the culprits for the situation in BiH at the Security Council meeting, leaked to the public a few days ago. Among other things, Schmidt states that since last year, the Republika Srpska (RS) authorities, led by the SNSD and Milorad Dodik, have intensified attempts to take over the state’s competencies in the field of defense, justice, and indirect taxes. In this way, the foundations of the Dayton Peace Agreement are being violated, but it directly threatens to annul all the reforms achieved in the last 25 years, the report states.
”I had the opportunity to see the report and I think it was very well done. It is necessary to list the culprits by name and surname, and not to use the term ‘some’, so that the Security Council knows who the disruptive factors in BiH are, which with their blockades of institutions, parallel systems, and transfer of competencies put us in a situation that BiH cannot move forward to meet the 14 conditions for progress towards the European Union (EU),” Alkalaj emphasized.
A firm stance
He explains that one member of the delegation, the highest in rank, can speak on behalf of BiH at the session, which in this case is chairman Dzaferovic.
”He will certainly provide information that member states need to hear. Beware, Ukraine’s reflections may affect BiH and the countries of the Western Balkans. That is why it is very important to take a firm stand that such things are unacceptable and that the World Organization stands behind peace in the Balkans and is ready to prevent any escalation that may occur as a result of the war in Ukraine, but also some other repercussions that the world is fighting against, in order for the region to be stable and to ensure the progress of the economy, which is definitely in a difficult position in this new situation,” said the Ambassador Sven Alkalaj.
