An Illegal Amount of Phthalates was found in 44% of the Toy Samples in BiH

32 samples of children’s toys were taken from the market of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) and laboratory analysis was carried out, which determined that 14 samples, or 44%, contain phthalates in a concentration greater than 0.1 percent of the mass of plasticized material, announced the Market Surveillance Agency of BiH.

The Agency and the competent inspectorates of the Republika Srpska (RS), the Federation of BiH (FBiH), and the Brcko District jointly conducted the monitoring of toys and children’s products for the content of phthalates.

In accordance with the results of the laboratory analysis, the relevant inspections ordered the withdrawal from the market and the destruction of unsafe toys.

The Agency reminded that in accordance with the Decision on restricting the placing on the market of toys and products for children containing phthalates, the use of phthalates DENP, DVP, VVP /DEHP, DBP, BBP/ in toys and products for children and phthalates DINP, DIDP, and DNOP /DINP, DIDP and DNOP/ in toys and products for children that children can put in their mouths is prohibited in concentrations higher than 0.1 percent of the mass of plasticized material.

According to the Agency, 1.112 pieces of children’s toys were withdrawn and destroyed from the BiH market, and they add that toy control activities will continue to be carried out continuously.
