The area sown under raspberries increased by 5,9%, under buckwheat by 57,0%, under soy-beans by 13,7%, under rapeseed by 61,9% and under wheat by 2,7% in relation with the same period of 2017.
The area sown under maize decreased by 1,3%, under sunflower by 37,7%, under carrot by 9,1%, under peas by 10,5% and under spinach by 11,1% in relation with the same period of 2017.
In 2017, the area sown under raspberries increased by 22,1%, under buckwheat by 11,2%, under triticale by 5,8%, under soybeans by 7,5%, under rapeseed by 24,1% and under tobacco by 2,4% in relation with the same period of 2016. The area sown under wheat decreased by 2,7%, under barley by 1,1%, under carrot by 12,0%, under cabbage by 3,7% and under potatoes mercantile by 1,3% in relation with the same period of 2016.
Production of fruits and vegetables is one of the most important sectors in agriculture in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In the last couple of years, this sector has recorded a large increase in production, especially in the subsector of berry fruits. The increase in production of fruits and vegetables during the last couple of years is a direct result of significant investments across the entire Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Fertile lowlands comprise 16% of agricultural land in Bosnia and Herzegovina, 62% is less fertile hilly and mountainous areas, while the Mediterranean area accounts for 22%. Only 0.65% of the area suitable for agriculture is irrigated; this small percentage is due to an undeveloped irrigation infrastructure.
The highest-quality soils are to be found in the valleys of the rivers Sava, Una, Sana, Vrbas, Bosna and Drina. These valleys are suitable for the sustainable production of cereal crops (wheat, barley, soybeans, corn); the breeding of cattle in barns; and the large-scale growing of fruits (apples, plums, pears), vegetables, medicinal herbs and industrial crops.
