The Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) Antonio Guterres said today that the world is on the brink of a wider war in the Middle East.
“We are on the brink of a wider war that would engulf the Middle East, with dramatic consequences around the world,” Guterres said.
He called for an immediate end to Israeli and American attacks on Iran and Tehran’s attacks on its neighbors.
“Many aspects of the conflict are uncertain, but one thing is not: if the drums of war continue to beat, escalation will only make things worse. The spiral of death and destruction must be stopped,” Guterres added.
US-Israeli attacks on Iran began on February 28, and since then Iran has responded with attacks on US bases in the countries of the region. Israel, for its part, launched attacks on southern Lebanon, where the stronghold of the Iran-backed Hezbollah movement is located.
