Analysis: How much is the Population declining in BiH?

What does the demographics of the world look like? The latest United Nations (UN) projections suggest that the global population could rise to around 8.5 billion in 2030, 9.7 billion in 2050 and 10.4 billion in 2100. That’s incredible data! There are even two countries that have a population of one billion and are still in a close race for the top spot. On the other hand, there are countries, including ours, which are struggling with a decreasing number of inhabitants, and UN estimates do not have positive predictions for them. Here is graphics with the latest estimates.

Countries with decreasing population

There is a number of countries that appear to be “shrinking” from a population perspective. To explain this somewhat surprising trend, the top 10 countries by population decline were shown (Bulgaria, Lithuania, Latvia, Ukraine, Serbia, BiH, Croatia, Moldova, Japan, Albania).

The graphic ranked countries by rate of population decline, based on the projected rate of change between 2020 and 2050 using data from the UN. Unfortunately, Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) is one of them.

Population of BiH

Fertility in all European countries is now below the level required for full population replacement in the long term (about 2.1 children per woman), and in most cases fertility has been below replacement level for several decades.

Our country belongs to the category of countries with catastrophic figures and estimates say that BiH is facing a dramatic population decline and if the current trends continue: in less than 50 years, slightly more than one and a half million people will live in the country. It is stated in the analysis published by the UN Population Fund (UNFPA).

Population forecast for BIH

For BiH, the population is predicted to decrease to 2.7 million in 2050. The fertility rate in BiH is well below the population replacement rate of 2.1 births per woman with 1.26 births per woman, N1 reports.
