Yesterday was marked the 90th anniversary since the birth of the first President of the independent Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Alija Izetbegović. One of the most important politicians in history of B&H was born on the 8th of August 1925, in Bosanski Šamac.
He was born in respected bey’s family which lived in Belgrade. However, in 1868, according to the chronicles “under Serbian terror” they moved to a safer place. They chose Bosanski Šamac.
The very beginning of Alija Izetbegović’s life is related with the two rivers, which could be seen from the windows of the house where he was born, Bosna River and Sava River.
The name of the first river will be the fate of his mature years, when he with his Party of Democratic Action (SDA) won the authority and entered the Presidency of B&H, after which started a bloody war for winning the independence and maintenance of territorial integrity.
Izetbegović will always be remembered as one of the most important politicians in the history of B&H whose people will always keep him in their hearts.
Attitudes about his policy pursued are still being polarized, but the fact is that Alija Izetbegović was one of the biggest European democrats of his time.
He was respected both at the East and the West, and he symbolically managed to put the United States and Iran on the side of the state he was running, which was unimaginable back then.
The great leader of a small country in South Eastern Europe, as once described by his former close associate Timur Numić, had the strength, courage and wisdom to harshly criticize the Islamic world in Riyadh and Tehran, and that no one, couldn’t or did not have the power to blame him for that or to respond to him.
Despite being a president, Izetbegovic didn’t liked hearing that someone says that he is ruling the country, because he strongly believed that no one has ever managed to rule B&H, but it only seemed like that.
He emphasized that his vision of B&H is very clear, a complete and democratic country, but he was also aware of the fact that life and the reality are often different.
