Srdjan Aleksic died on this day, 23 years ago in Trebinje.
He lost his life defending a fellow citizen of the army to which he belonged himself.
Srdjan Aleksic was attacked by a group of criminals on the 21st of January. The group of reservists of the Army of Republika Srpska, of which Srdjan was a member as well, were bullying and beating Alen Glavovic, a Bosnian from Trebinje on the market place. Srdjan jumped to help, while several other people, who stood near, only calmly watched. Four soldiers then, instead of Alen, decided to beat a “traitor” Aleksic, who fell into coma after getting injured. He died 6 days later, on the 27th of January.
We will remember Srdjan forever, it is the least we can do for this Trebinje hero. Anniversaries are sad, but we must not forget them. He was what everyone should be regardless of the name, color, religion or nationality. He was a human being, above all.
Srdjan has laid down his life fighting for his friend, but he also laid the foundations for an immortal deed. The heroic act of defense of his fellow citizen, which had cost him his life, is a shining example of human courage.
Srdjan’s father wrote on his son’s death certificate a sentence that will be remembered forever: “He died while doing his human duty.”
