In the conflict in the center of Bjelovar, which took place a few minutes after midnight, six people were injured, one was shot, and 12 of them were detained, the Bjelovar-Bilogora police reported.

A confrontation between several people with the use of firearms took place a few minutes after midnight on the Square of Croatian Defenders in Bjelovar, and according to the police report, six people were slightly injured, and one had a gunshot wound.

The police arrested 12 people, including the suspect for the wounding. An investigation and further investigations are currently being conducted, the Bjelovar-Bilogora Police Department announced on Friday morning.

“My God, a big fight. Bad weather or bad alcohol. We saw police tapes, so everything was strange. We didn’t hear any stories”, are some of the reactions of the people of Bjelovar.

Mayor Dario Hrebak strongly condemned last night’s incident in the center of Bjelovar. He requested that the perpetrators be punished, but emphasized that the incident must not cast a shadow on the Bjelovar Roma.

“This is a terrible thing that happened last night in Bjelovar. Only thanks to the quick reaction of the citizens and the Bjelovar police, to whom I thank for their reaction, a tragedy was avoided. This is unacceptable for Bjelovar and I demand the harshest punishments of the justice system for all participants. This incident must not be thrown away shadow on the Roma population in our city who live in peace like all the citizens of our peaceful and safe city”, stated Mayor Hrebak in a status on the social network.

He added that he had heard from the representatives of the Roma minority in the City of Bjelovar, who confirmed to him that they were Roma settlers who live on the Croatia-Germany route.

“In any case, we will also install additional cameras that have so far proved to be a complete hit and help the police in the search for perpetrators of such and similar crimes. Bjelovar will continue to be a peaceful and safe city!” said Mayor Hrebak.
