Germany’s Bild newspaper, citing sources, reported that at least 11 people were killed and 80 injured in the attack on the Christmas market in Magdeburg.

The reports of 11 deaths have not yet been officially confirmed, and Mayor Regina Dolores Stieler Hinz told the news agency that one person was killed and more than 50 were injured.

According to information from the Magdeburg police, the perpetrator drove “at least 400 meters through the Christmas market.” The media reported that the attacker was a Saudi citizen born in 1974 who was arrested by police at the scene.

Videos posted on social media showed a black BMW plowing into a crowd of people at the Christmas market at high speed.

Reports from the scene of the incident indicate general chaos and that first aid tents have been set up to provide first aid to the injured, with hospitals preparing to receive a large number of injured people.

Politicians have called the events an attack, and Chancellor Olaf Scholz has also reacted, writing that the reports from Magdeburg suggest something bad.

“The reports from Magdeburg suggest something bad. My thoughts are with the victims and their families. We stand with you and with the citizens of Magdeburg. I thank the dedicated rescuers in these anxious hours,” Scholz wrote.
