The entire region and the world followed the case against eight Croats who were suspected in Zambia of attempted child trafficking. Their confessions after coming home are terrifying.
On June 1st, the trial was interrupted, because the Judge of the High Court in Ndola, Mary Mulanda, stated that the state failed to prove the case against the Croats, and an order was immediately issued for their release.
She found that all the documents were correct and that the children were adopted according to all the rules.
In one show, Zoran Subosic talked about the months-long forced stay in Zambia, the prison, the chaotic trial and the uncertainty that followed four Croatian couples in their attempt to become parents.
His wife Azra Imamovic Subosic spoke in the report before the interview.
“We tried for years to have a child, went to Petrova and to a private clinic, it became exhausting for me and Zoki, who felt guilty that I had to go through it, and he couldn’t help. We were sitting by the sea when he suggested that we might adopt a child,” she said.
Then she talked about the children adopted by Croatian couples.
“All the children quickly relaxed, Mariella started calling me mom the next day, they were preparing her for that, she had our photo. We explained to the children where we were going, ‘we are going home’, on the plane. However, we were stopped at the airport, they took our luggage off the plane and took us to the office for questioning, then we went to the police station. The worst place in the world is that detention center, dirty with no windows, huge cockroaches, spiders, no water, no light, we covered ourselves with scarves to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes because of malaria. I didn’t know where Zoki or Mariella was, that was the worst,” she added.
“We had water and bread to eat, we didn’t think about anything but our husbands, our children, but we agreed that we shouldn’t talk because we would immediately cry, and you can’t cry there. There were 50 of us in one small space. You cry at night when you can’t sleep, you just hear women crying. It’s like a barn, there’s no running water, you pour yourself from a bucket, a small yard is surrounded by a wall, and chickens are slaughtered in it, while billions of flies enter our noses and eyes,” she explained, N1 reports.
