The Sarajevo National Theatre is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the performance of the play “Balkan Spy in Sarajevo”.
The play “Balkan Spy in Sarajevo”, based on the brilliant text by Dušan Kovačević, adapted and directed by Sulejman Kupusović, will have its 100th anniversary performance on Thursday, April 17th, starting at 8:00 PM, at the Gervais Center in Opatija, on tour in Istria.
Since its premiere, the play has won numerous awards at festivals in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region, and has performed on many stages. The fiftieth performance was celebrated on October 29, 2015, and now, twelve years later, the play is celebrating its 100th performance.
“Balkan Spy in Sarajevo” by director Sulejman Kupusović had its symbolic premiere on November 29, the Republic Day of the former Yugoslavia, and the play has become a symbol of theater that depicts social absurdities through humor and satire.
This play is based on the brilliant text by Dušan Kovačević, which was once the basis for a cult film, in the 1980s, which still continues to be popular today because it is permeated with themes that have found their way into the present day. Despite initial doubts, the author of the original text was delighted with the adaptation, emphasizing that the play “helped the text to be alive, to be current”.
The role of Sabahudin Čvorović is brilliantly played by Izudin Bajrović, supported by Ejla Bavčić, Aldin Omerović, and Milan Pavlović. In the original cast, the role of Sanja was played by Zana Marjanović, and later Merima Lepić Redžepović and Mona Muratović joined the ensemble. The set design is by Marijela Hašimbegović.
The 100th performance of The Balkan Spy in Sarajevo is not only a celebration of the play, but also a tribute to Sulejman Kupusović, whose vision and dedication left an indelible mark on Bosnian and Herzegovinian theater, N1 writes.
