The President of the United States (U.S.) Joe Biden said that a ceasefire could be reached in the Gaza Strip if the Palestinian movement Hamas releases the hostages.

At a rally in Seattle, Biden commented on the current situation in the Middle East with a focus on Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip.

He announced that the U.S. would suspend arms support to Israel in the event of a major attack on Rafah, a city in the southern Gaza Strip that is home to around 1.5 million displaced Palestinians.

“Everyone’s eyes are on what will happen next in Gaza. We are closely following the process. If Hamas were to release the hostages, women and the elderly, there could be a ceasefire tomorrow,” Biden said.

He reminded that Israel also said that the ceasefire depends on Hamas and the release of the hostages.

A few days ago, the American president said that he would suspend arms aid to Israel if it carried out a major attack on Rafah.

This Biden’s statement was met with criticism from Israel and the Republican Party in the U.S.
