According to the IT Threat Evolution Report by the company Kaspersky Lab, Ransomware – a malicious program that encrypts files and requires sacrifice ransom in exchange for their decryption – is still one of the most common types of activities that involve modern cyber-criminals.

The cost of its development are relatively low and can provide potentially high income if it results in a successful infection.

Besides increasing number of its victims, criminals are also exploring new areas of its operation. In the third quarter of this year, the top five countries with the highest percentage of users affected by encrypted ransomware were: Japan (4.83%), Croatia (3.71%), South Korea (3.36%), Tunisia (3.22%) and Bulgaria (3.2%).

Main driver of growth in the number of affected users was Trojan-Downloader.JS.Cryptoload – groups of downloaders written in JavaScript language, capable of taking different groups of crypto Ransomware. The most widespread among them in the third quarter were CTB-Locker (28.34% of affected users), Locky (9.6%) and CryptXXX (8.95%).

Since the encrypted Ransomware is one of the most dangerous types of malicious programs ever created, whose consequences can be very serious, Kaspersky Lab offers tips to protect yourself and your organization against these threats, and the same can be found at this LINK.
