BiH Citizens expect New Increase in Price of Electricity

Electricity in the Republika Srpska is set to increase in price from January 1, 2025. The Energy Regulatory Commission has received a request. The amount of the price increase is not officially known at this time. Institutions are still avoiding answering this question. Energy experts see one of the causes in the decline in electricity exports from Bosnia and Herzegovina this year of 400 million marks. Why is this decline being recorded?

Electricity is increasing in price. It is not yet officially known by how much. It is known that the Energy Regulatory Commission will decide on the request of the Electric Power Company of the Republika Srpska by December 15. The request is being hidden from the public. The institutions we contacted did not provide us with answers to the questions asked. The following was previously announced.

Luka Petrović, Director of the Electric Power Company of the Republika Srpska

“If someone, for example, consumes 400 kW of electricity, their total bill would increase by 2 marks. Someone who consumes 600 kW of electricity would have their bill increased by 3.5 to 4 convertible marks. If someone consumes over 1000 kW, their bill would increase by 15 convertible marks”

It was speculated that the increase in the price of electricity would amount to up to 20 percent. The latest information is that it will be from 5 to 12 percent. It is certain that the increase in the price is inevitable. What are the reasons? Electricity exports from Bosnia and Herzegovina for 10 months in 2024 are 400 million marks lower than the same period last year. These are data from the Indirect Taxation Administration of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Last year, electricity worth 927 million marks was exported from BiH. This year, 527 million marks. The largest drop in exports is related to Serbia and Croatia. The difference is 191 and 123 million marks, respectively.

Almir Bečarević, energy expert

This year, for the first time, exports equal imports, which means that as much as we export, we import. We are no longer exporters of electricity. To the extent that we would create a surplus.

Citizens and the economy will pay that price. Higher electricity prices will also raise the prices of all other products. The consumer basket is expected to be even more expensive.

Murisa Marić, Consumers’ Association “Don”

Every price increase, even the smallest one, causes a chain reaction because all those who depend on electricity will raise their prices in due course. So it is never just about an increase in the price of electricity.

Let us recall that in the Federation of BiH, electricity has been 10 percent more expensive since August. In the Republika Srpska, electricity prices increased at the beginning of the year, but a tariff model was also introduced. New price increases are certainly expected very soon…
