Minister for Human Rights and Refugees of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sevlid Hurtić, met in New York with the United Nations Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide to United Nations Secretary-General, Alice Wairimu Nderitu.

Minister Hurtić thanked Special Advisor Nderitu for attending and speaking at the international conference “Heroines of Srebrenica”, which was held last year in Potočari, on the eve of the 27th anniversary of the genocide, and emphasized the importance of her role in spreading the truth about the genocide committed in July 1995 in Srebrenica, announced the BiH Ministry for Human Rights and Refugees.

Hurtić informed Nderitu about the activities on the adoption of the framework law on the rights of torture victims, which is an obligation towards the victims, but also an obligation to fulfill international standards and recommendations.

He also presented the activities related to the implementation of decisions made by the UN Committee against Torture, which represents the obligation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Special Adviser Nderitu said that she fully understands and follows the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina. She pointed out that she is familiar with the project related to victims of sexual violence, and is in communication with the UN in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

She believes that this project should be continued, that is, supported through other UN agencies. When it comes to the law on torture, she pointed out that it is crucial to support countries that have ratified the Convention, to regulate this issue with domestic laws.
