SafeJournalists, a network of media associations and unions in the Western Balkans, on International Women’s Day launches the campaign ‘Women Journalists in the Front Lines’ (women.safejournalists.net), whose aim is to highlight the position of women in journalism and their exposure to attacks and threats.
Since 2016, more than 1,650 cases have been registered in the network’s database of attacks and threats against journalists and other media workers.
Year after year, the number of threats and attacks directed at female journalists and media workers increased. Because of this, the SafeJournalists network decided to launch a campaign within the framework of which the first online exhibition was organized ‘Women journalists in the front lines’, championing women journalists who have continued to fight for the right of the public to know despite threats, attacks and gender-based discrimination. The exhibition features 14 journalists from 7 countries in the region who experienced discrimination, pressure, threats, and even physical attacks, but continued with the work nevertheless.
For this reason, the SafeJournalists network decided to launch a campaign within the framework of which the first online exhibition was organized
“It first-hand shows the motivations, sources of strength, and main drivers of those who defend democratic values through the public’s right to know. We hope that the stories of women journalists will give strength and motivation to other professionals to continue doing the work they love,” announced the SafeJournalists.
The SafeJournalists network will remain dedicated to monitoring, analyzing and reporting on violations of the rights of female journalists to protect their safety. The exhibition “Women Journalists in the Front Lines” can be viewed at https://women.safejournalists.net/
