Members of the Zvornik Border Police Unit prevented the smuggling of migrants in Bjelovac, in the Bratunac municipality, with the help of the Special Team for the Prevention of Illegal Migration, the Border Police of Bosnia and Herzegovina announced today.

After spotting a boat from the Republic of Serbia sailing on the Drina River towards the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina during surveillance of the state border and using specialist equipment, members of JGP Zvornik stopped a boat with 15 people of Afro-Asian descent, six men and four women and five children.

While working on this case, while trying to stop a vehicle that could be connected to the smuggling of these migrants, a member of the Border Police of Bosnia and Herzegovina was injured by the driver disobeying the orders of police officers, ie did not stop but continued driving and hit a police officer inflicting bodily injuries on him.

The duty prosecutor of the Prosecutor’s Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina was informed about the event, stating that it was a criminal offense of “smuggling of persons” and “attack on an authorized official”. Under the supervision of the duty prosecutor, members of the Border Police of Bosnia and Herzegovina continue to work and search for the perpetrator of this crime. The Bratunac Police Station was also informed about the event, and its officers inspected the scene.

The injured police officer was examined at a medical facility and referred for further treatment.

The smuggled migrants were handed over to members of the Service for Foreigners’ Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina for further action, the statement said.
