BiH Presidency Chairman: We will strengthen the friendship between BiH and Ecuador

After numerous meetings yesterday in New York, Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Denis Bećirović started today’s meetings with a conversation with the Ambassador of the Republic of Ecuador José De La Gasco.

During the meeting with the ambassador of Ecuador, they discussed the importance of adopting the resolution on July 11 as an international day of remembrance and commemoration of the genocide in Srebrenica committed in 1995.

Bećirović emphasized that the adoption of the resolution in the UN General Assembly is an obligation to the victims of genocide, but also to future generations around the world. The adoption of the resolution would show commitment to justice and truth, and at the same time, recognition would be given to the families of the victims of the genocide in Srebrenica, who are daily exposed to the insults of genocide deniers.

Ambassador De La Gasca expressed his position very clearly that what happened in Srebrenica was not an incident but a genocide. This was confirmed by two UN courts and those who respect international law must have a clear position on the genocide committed in Srebrenica.

Bećirović said that the resolution is based on international and national law, and that the final judgments of the UN’s highest courts confirmed that genocide was committed against Bosniaks in the UN safe zone of Srebrenica.

During the conversation, the global importance of genocide prevention was highlighted, as well as the importance of studying genocide in the education of children and young people. Bećirović pointed out that the education system, in which the truth about the genocide in Srebrenica is integrated, will contribute to the preservation of peace and stability in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region in the long term, and will contribute to the reconciliation process.

BiH Ambassador to the UN Zlatko Lagumdžija also attended the meetings at the UN headquarters in New York, it was announced from the Cabinet of the Chairman of the BiH Presidency, Denis Bećirović.
