BiH records Decrease in Number of illegal Border Crossings

The number of illegal entries into the European Union from the Western Balkans is almost three times higher than in the same period last year. Of the surrounding countries, Serbia is the most endangered, with the largest number of migrants, while the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina is, at least for now, satisfactory.

Migrant pressure on Bosnia and Herzegovina has eased significantly in the last three years. This is also shown by the number of migrants who are currently in the reception centers. Our country is just a stopover for them and they do not choose the means to reach the ultimate goal, and that today, unfortunately, had a fatal outcome in Bihac.

“Last night at around 9:40 pm, colleagues from the Izacic Border Crossing reported that an unpleasant event took place right in front of the border with Croatia. Illegal crossing of a migrant who hid under the truck. For unknown reasons, he fell while driving and suffered severe injuries. The migrant was transported to the “Dr. Irfan Ljubijankić ” hospital, they tried to help him, but unfortunately he passed away this morning”, said the spokesman of the Police Directorate of the Ministry of the Interior of the USC, Adnan Beganovic.

Every day, migrants try to cross the border illegally and enter the European Union. That is why some of them do not want to go to the Lipa camp near Bosanski Petrovac.

“Camp Lipa is too far from the city and the border. For example, we have only 5 kilometers from the city to the border, and almost 40 kilometers from Lipa to the border,” said a migrant from Pakistan.

“I started my journey from Afghanistan to here half a year ago, my goal is France because my whole family is there. I hope I will succeed,” says another migrant from Pakistan.

The decrease in the influx of migrants is a consequence of the change in the route to the European Union. Today, migrants are more oriented towards Hungary and Romania.

“Currently, we do not have much information that the route could be diverted to Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is obvious that we have a sufficient number of capacities in all reception centers and, importantly, we had the opportunity to visit the Western Balkans recently and what we have noticed on that route is that there are no major movements and shifts “, says the Deputy Director of the Service for Foreigners Affairs of BiH, Mirsad Buzar.

Due to its geographical position, Una-Sana Canton has been the most optimal route for migrants from Syria, Pakistan, Afghanistan and other countries for years. There are just over 600 migrants in the reception centers that exist here, and the same number walk freely. According to the Ministry of the Interior, the security situation is satisfactory
