On the occasion of Earth Day, the award ceremony for the winners of “Trashformers II: Schools Leading the 4R Revolution” was held today at Europe House. The competition, designed to encourage schools across Bosnia and Herzegovina to develop sustainable solutions for waste reduction, attracted numerous applications showcasing the creativity and innovative spirit of students nationwide.

Ferdinand Koenig, Head of Communications and Spokesperson of the EU in Bosnia and Herzegovina, presented the awards. During the ceremony, he emphasised the vital role of youth-led environmental initiatives. “Today, we celebrate the winners and recognize the creativity, responsibility and environmental leadership shown by each applicant. We congratulate each student and their mentors for demonstrating a deep understanding of environmental issues we face and how they showed that true change begins with all of us – in our communities. We hope to see more initiatives within schools and local communities and we will happily support bold and fresh ideas which contribute to a safer and cleaner environment,” underlined Koenig.

The winners presented their videos and project concepts, for which they were awarded an ecological excursion to a nature park in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The six winning schools are:

  • Primary schools “Druga osnovna” and “Četvrta osnovna” (Brčko District)
  • Primary school “Dvorovi” (Dvorovi)
  • Gimnazija “Meša Selimović” (Tuzla)
  • High School Konjic (Konjic)
  • Secondary School Centre “Nedžad Ibrišimović” (Ilijaš)

The “Trashformers II” competition built on the success and interest of last year’s competition. It was organised by Europe House in cooperation with the EU-funded CETAP project which addresses the need for a sustainable and circular approach to waste, emphasising separate collection, reuse and recycling to reduce environmental impact and enhance economic growth. The competition continued to provide a platform for students to implement circular economy principles—promoting waste reduction, material reuse, and recycling—in line with European Union environmental policies and the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans.
