Boris Johnson: Mosques, Churches and Synagogues in Sarajevo talk about Optimism

British Minister of Foreign Affairs Boris Johnson wrote a text on the topic of the Euro-Atlantic integrations of BiH.

“Winston Churchill once said that “the Balkans creates more history than it can bear.” Everyone who takes a walk in the streets of Bascarsija in Sarajevo, as I did last April, will understand what Churchill meant.

Narrow streets are still full of scars of many traumas, from the murder of Franz Ferdinand to the longest siege in the history of modern Europe.

However, mosques, churches and synagogues, all together, are talking a more optimistic story of peaceful coexistence. During my visit to BiH, I urged politicians to focus on the future, instead of continuing the fights from the past.

The fact that this message made an impact on the young people that I had the privilege to meet, encouraged me. They are very determined to build a peaceful and successful country, in which all citizens will feel comfortable.

If your politicians are ready to make a step forward, we are ready to support them. The United Kingdom will gather leaders of all six Western Balkan countries in June, together with our European partners, at the Summit that will take place in London.

I want this event to make a real difference in the lives of citizens of BiH. That is the reason why we will focus on the support to young businessmen, especially in the digital sector and strengthening of regional cooperation in the sector of infrastructure development, as well as the fight against corruption and organized crime,” wrote Johnson.
