Sadmira Buljubasic, a refugee from Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), was recently unanimously elected as the new mayor of the city of Roros in Norway.

Sadmira Buljubasic arrived in Norway with her family in 1995. They first lived in Sandnessjoen and then in Glamos, a part of Roros, in the same year. At that time, she was seven years old.

In Norway, she lives surrounded by family and friends, with numerous BiH families who settled in that area during the 1990s.

“We came to Norway from BiH in 1995. First to Sandnessjoen, then to Glamos in Roros in the same year. I was seven years old then. Today, about seven BiH families who came in the 90s live in the municipality. All of them have built good foundations and have integrated well into the local community,” Buljubasic said.

After the previous mayor was elected to parliament, the party nominated Sadmira Buljubasic as her successor. She accepted that offer almost immediately, with the support of her family.

She assumes office today, December 1st, and until then she has performed her regular duties.

Before becoming mayor, Sadmira Buljubasic worked as a healthcare worker and was a department manager in a nursing home.

She had long been active in local sports clubs, organizing football, handball, and gymnastics, and advocating that every child have the opportunity to engage in sports and leisure activities, regardless of origin or financial means.

As mayor, she plans to devote attention to integration and to enable children to take part in sports and other activities.

Roros is currently on the so-called “Robek list”, which means that this municipality has serious financial problems and budget constraints.

One of the first tasks of the new mayor will be to work on improving the financial situation, with strict priorities and well-considered decisions.
