Boutros Boutros Ghali: The Man who believed that the UN deals with Yugoslavia too much!

10621083_1107210715996550_2053287445_nThe war in BiH from 1992 until 1995 marked the United Nations in a way. At that time, this organization was led by the Egyptian Copt Boutros Boutros-Ghali as a Secretary General. He died yesterday, at the age of 94.

Many people agree that it was during the tenure of Boutros-Ghali as the Secretary General of the UN that the inability of this organization has been demonstrated, due to passivity and failure to prevent the aggression on BiH.

Citizens of BiH will probably never forgive Boutros-Ghali for playing a major role in introducing embargo on the import of weapons – the move which brought the Army of the Republic of BiH in a tough position.

Boutros-Ghali is also remembered as the first African to serve one of the leading positions in the UN. However, he was not much successful in solving the war conflicts in Ruanda, either.

A large number of crimes during the war in BiH, including the genocide in Srebrenica, occurred as a consequence of UN’s irresponsibility, given that Srebrenica was a safe zone. The former ambassador of Venezuela to UN Diego Aria confirmed the responsibility of the UN and Boutros-Ghali. He testified at the court in Hague and said that there was no dilemma about what is to happen and that he had seen it himself while staying in Srebrenica, two years before the genocide in 1995.

Aria highlighted that Boutros-Ghali bears full responsibility for not warning the Security Council of the UN about what is going on in Srebrenica.

Boutros-Ghali was not supported by the USA, due to his disputed statement that the UN deals with the war at the territory of the former Yugoslavia too much. That is why the USA vetoed his re-election as the secretary general of the UN.
