The Standing Committee of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly decided to create a new status for countries that aspire to join Alias, and to officially designate Ukraine, BiH and Georgia as NATO candidates.

As stated in a statement on NATO’s official website, these statuses should be ratified during the session in Sofia, which will be held at the end of May.

“Ukraine, Georgia and Bosnia and Herzegovina would receive the status of candidates in NATO. Kosovo was a parliamentary observer and will become an associate member, and Malta will receive associate membership,” the statement said.

By the way, more than 40 NATO delegates participated in the assembly. Delegates welcomed Sweden as the newest ally, and Swedish parliamentarians attended the first meeting as full members.

Kaja Kalas, Prime Minister of Estonia, said in her speech that NATO’s doors should remain open, as this makes the Alliance stronger.

Also, NATO MPs prepared their initial recommendations on how allied heads of state and government should strengthen collective defense and deterrence, transform NATO and remain fully committed to the victory of Ukraine, Onasa writes.
