Cheese and Honey Trail of East Herzegovina

Larger cities in our country are not and should not be the only tourist offer. Rural areas have a lot to offer, especially when it comes to organic food production. In one way, Eastern Herzegovina is leading the way. The Cheese and Honey Trail of Eastern Herzegovina is a project of sustainable tourism in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) and is financed by USAID Tourism. The focus is on Bileca, Gacko, Nevesinje, Berkovici and Ljubinje. What can these regions offer?

Nevesinje village Bratac was included in the 14 most beautiful villages in our country thanks to the USAID sustainable tourism development project. The residents of Bratac have many plans, such as putting up a sign where all the village sights would be marked, as well as an info desk.

“We have already submitted information about locals who have the capacity for lodging, recently there were some geologists, and among them one from Brazil who asked where he could stay here and rest. I think we could make a good story out of all of this“, stressed Slobodan Gusic, a participant in the sustainable tourism development project.

Rich nature and peace are increasingly in demand when it comes to wishes for a quality vacation. But what kind of vacation would it be without good food. The Nevesinje region has always been known for its high-quality cream, as well as cheese from the bellows. That is why it is not surprising that cheese found itself in the “Cheese and Honey Trail” project in order to contribute to the construction of a future Slow food destination.

“It started about twenty years ago. At first, it was slow until customers were acquired. Currently, that cheese is missing because there are fewer of us producing it. We have eight to ten cows,” says Miroslav Glogovac, a cheese producer from Nevesinje.

Another important segment in the offer of this region is, of course, honey. Branimir Tamindzija has been beekeeping for 16 years since he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. He says that the demand is high since honey also has healing properties, but for now, they do not have sufficient quantities. The goal is to increase production and get space for training beekeepers.
