China supports Iran in defending its sovereignty, security, and national dignity, said Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi during a phone conversation with Iran’s acting Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri.
Wang reiterated that China condemns the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh on July 31st in Tehran, emphasizing that this attack constitutes a violation of Iran’s sovereignty and threatens regional stability, according to a statement from the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Chinese Foreign Minister stated that the killing of Haniyeh “directly undermined the ceasefire negotiations in Gaza and disrupted regional peace and stability.”
“China supports Iran in defending its sovereignty, security, and national dignity in accordance with the law, as well as in its efforts to maintain regional peace and stability. China is ready to maintain close communication with Iran,” Wang said.
The meeting between the two top diplomats is seen as part of a broader effort by China to bolster its influence in the Middle East, where it has been increasingly active in diplomatic and economic affairs. Beijing’s support for Tehran comes as both countries face pressure from the West—China over its assertive policies in the Asia-Pacific region, and Iran over its nuclear ambitions.
Analysts suggest that the growing alignment between China and Iran could have significant implications for global geopolitics, particularly as both nations seek to counterbalance U.S. influence. The commitment to close communication between Beijing and Tehran signals a deepening of their strategic partnership, which could shape the future dynamics of the Middle East and beyond.
As the international community watches these developments closely, the prospect of enhanced Sino-Iranian cooperation could further complicate efforts to address the complex challenges in the region, particularly in relation to nuclear non-proliferation and regional stability.
