Citizens enjoyed the marking of the World Environment Day in Vilsonovo Šetalište

Vilsonovo setaliste obiljezavanje 2Citizens of Sarajevo had the opportunity to participate in the public marking of the World Environment Day which was held in Vilsonovo Šetalište yesterday afternoon.

BiH capital got the honour to host the event of marking the World Environment Day for the region of Europe and the program of the event will be last from 3 to 5 June. The organisation of the entire event o marking the World Environment Day is the United Nations Environment Program, BiH Government and numerous local partners and sponsors.

Representative of UNEP for BiH Amina Omićević, said on behalf of organisers that they are all satisfied with the number of citizens who came, and added that more similar events should be organised in times to come.

Visitors were very pleased and very interested in cycling event, which was organised by NGO ‘Horizont’, with the support of embassies of France and Austria to BiH.

French ambassador to BiH Roland Gilles also attended the yesterday’s event and noted the importance of environment protection.

‘BiH has a very beautiful environment, that must be protected, and we must teach young people to preserve the environment we have’, said Gilles.

Cycling track was installed at Vilsonovo Šetalište, and children and youth of Children’s SOS Village showed their cycling skills, and before that there were exhibition exercises and training.

‘The competition was organised in two categories: children and adults. The fastest competitors will be awarded, and the organisation ‘Horizont’ will give two bikes to Children’s SOS Village’, said the representative of the organisation Mirza Čengić.

One of the attractions during yesterday’s event, was paella –traditional Spanish meal that comes from Valencia, and everyone who visited had the chance to taste paella prepared by Kenan Sirhatlić.

Sirhatlić said: ‘This meal is interesting because all ingredients can be used. The main one is rice, but all other leftovers will be used as well, so nothing goes to waste.’

Volunteers of the action ‘Let’s Do It- Clean the Earth in one Day’ also gave their contribution to marking of the World Environment Day and said that the awareness about the importance of protecting environment must be increased.

They added that all environment protection organisations should unite, because with united forces we can do much more for the protection of environment.

Every year on 5 June, people throughout the world celebrate World Environment Day. Hundreds of thousands of aimed to improve the environment and provide a better future for the planet takes place in almost every country throughout the world.

The main message of marking the World Environment Day in Sarajevo is ‘‘Because we care: Let’s Share”. The components are contained in three aspects of ideas about sharing around which all activities are concentrated: Share food, share information, share knowledge.

The message reflects the concept of sharing as a universal answer to the global challenges of today and reflects the tradition of BiH and Sarajevo that includes helping fellow citizens, family and neighbours, as well as foreigners, with the greatest care and to share their meals with those who need it.
